What Are Dental Crowns Made Of?

Dental crowns are also made of porcelain fused with metal and are made to match the color of the teeth. Porcelain crowns look more like your natural tooth color.

There are dental crowns made from resin, which are not as expensive as other crowns.

All-porcelain and all-ceramic crowns give the best color match compared to other crowns. These crowns are good if you have metal allergies and are ideal for the front teeth.

There are also pressed ceramic crowns that have a hard inner core. They are good at replacing the metal liner in all-ceramic crowns. They have porcelain caps to give a good color match and are longer-lasting than porcelain crowns.

How is a Tooth Prepared For a Dental Crown?

To prepare for a dental crown you need to visit the dentist twice. During the first visit, the tooth is examined and prepared for an x-ray of the tooth and surrounding bone. First, the dentist does a root canal treatment if your tooth has a risk of infection, injury to the pulp, or tooth decay. The type of crown you have will depend on how much your tooth is filled. Filing is used to get enough shape and structure for the crown cover.

During second visit is where a permanent crown is placed on the tooth. The temporary crown is removed and the color and fit of the crown are checked. Local anesthetics are used to numb the tooth to allow fixing of the crown.
